Description

he Aglaonema ‘Snow White’, also commonly known as the Chinese Evergreen ‘Snow White’ or Aglaonema ‘Snowflake’, is a highly popular and attractive cultivar of the Aglaonema genus, cherished for its strikingly variegated foliage.

  • Foliage: The most defining feature of ‘Snow White’ is its beautiful contrast of green and white (or creamy-white) on its leaves. The leaves are typically broad, lance-shaped to ovate, and have a glossy texture. The variegation pattern is unique, featuring extensive splashes, speckles, and blotches of bright white or creamy white that are widely distributed across the dark green leaf blade. The amount of white can be quite dominant, sometimes giving the impression of a mostly white leaf with green edges or scattered green patches. This abundant white variegation gives the plant its “Snow White” or “Snowflake” appearance.
  • Growth Habit: Aglaonema ‘Snow White’ grows as an upright, bushy plant. It maintains a relatively compact form, making it an excellent choice for tabletops, desks, shelves, or as a floor plant in smaller spaces. As it matures, it may develop a short, cane-like stem.
  • Size: Indoors, ‘Snow White’ typically reaches a height of 1 to 3 feet (30-90 cm) with a similar spread. Its moderate growth rate contributes to its popularity as a houseplant that doesn’t quickly outgrow its space.
  • Flowers and Fruit: Like other Aglaonemas, ‘Snow White’ can produce small, inconspicuous flowers (a spadix surrounded by a spathe) followed by red berries, but these are rarely seen in typical indoor cultivation. The plant is primarily grown for its ornamental foliage.
  • Origin: Aglaonemas, or Chinese Evergreens, are native to the tropical and subtropical regions of Asia (e.g., Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines), where they thrive in the humid, low-light conditions of forest understories. ‘Snow White’ is a cultivated variety bred for its specific attractive variegation.
  • Care Requirements (as a houseplant):
    • Light: Thrives in bright, indirect light. While it can tolerate lower light conditions, brighter indirect light will help maintain the vibrancy and dominance of the white variegation. Direct sunlight should be avoided as it can easily scorch the delicate white parts of the leaves.
    • Watering: Prefers consistently moist but not soggy soil. Allow the top 1-2 inches of soil to dry out between waterings. Overwatering is a common problem and can lead to root rot.
    • Temperature: Enjoys warm temperatures, ideally between 18-29°C (65-85°F). It is sensitive to cold drafts and temperatures below 16°C (60°F), which can cause leaf damage.
    • Humidity: Benefits from moderate to high humidity, mirroring its tropical origins. While it can adapt to average indoor humidity, increased humidity through misting, a pebble tray, or a humidifier will help it thrive and prevent leaf tip browning.
    • Soil: Requires a well-draining potting mix that also retains some moisture. A mix containing peat moss, perlite, or coco coir is suitable.
    • Toxicity: Like all Aglaonemas, ‘Snow White’ contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals and is toxic if ingested by pets (cats, dogs, horses) and humans. Ingestion can cause oral irritation, pain, swelling of the mouth, tongue, and lips, excessive drooling, and difficulty swallowing. It should be kept out of reach of curious pets and children.

Aglaonema ‘Snow White’ is highly valued for its elegant and refreshing appearance, its air-purifying qualities, and its relatively low-maintenance nature, making it a popular choice for enhancing the aesthetics of homes and offices.
