Euphorbia milii

Euphorbia milii, more commonly known as the Crown of Thorns, is a popular, low-maintenance succulent shrub native to Madagascar. It’s cherished for its spiny stems and branches, which are said to be the source of the thorns used in the crown placed on Jesus Christ’s head, and for its vibrant, year-round blooms.

  • Stems and Thorns: This plant has thick, succulent, woody stems covered in prominent, sharp gray spines up to an inch long. The stems are adapted for storing water, which contributes to the plant’s drought tolerance.
  • Leaves: The Euphorbia milii has bright green, fleshy, and oval-shaped leaves that are arranged spirally on the stems. In colder temperatures or during its resting season, the plant may drop some of its leaves.
  • Flowers and Bracts: The true flowers are small and inconspicuous. However, they are surrounded by a pair of showy, petal-like bracts that come in a variety of colors, including red, pink, white, yellow, and orange. These vibrant bracts are what give the plant its ornamental appeal.
  • Light: The Crown of Thorns thrives in bright, direct sunlight. When grown indoors, a south- or west-facing window is ideal. While it can tolerate some shade, insufficient light can lead to leggy growth and reduced flowering.
  • Soil: It requires a well-draining soil to prevent root rot. A specialized cactus or succulent potting mix is an excellent choice.
  • Watering: This plant is drought-tolerant. Water thoroughly but only after the soil has dried out completely. Overwatering is the most common cause of problems for this plant, as it can lead to root rot. Water less frequently during the winter.
  • Temperature: It prefers a warm environment, ideally between 65°F and 75°F (18°C to 24°C). It is not cold-hardy and should be protected from temperatures below 50°F (10°C).
  • Fertilizer: Fertilize during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer diluted to half strength.
  • Toxicity: It’s important to note that all parts of the Euphorbia milii contain a milky, white sap that can cause skin irritation and is poisonous if ingested. It should be handled with care and kept out of reach of children and pets.
